Candy Riot is a local Synth Rock band that focuses on pop songs with dance beats and huge vocal harmonies. We’ve gathered about 100k streams on Spotify and our last 8 singles in a row were spun on 101X Homegrown Live.
Hey! Can you introduce yourselves and tell me how you formed as a band?
We started as a duo (under a different band name) with intentions of having fun and creating musical art. We played a few shows and quickly recognized our live performances needed more wind. About a month and 107 band names later, we changed the name and started perusing for a vocalist and synth player. Ricky and Erica impressed and were added to the band just in time to release our first LP ‘Moonstar’, which comes out August 31st.
What do you think your role is in this world?
We take emotions and give them a soundtrack, and hopefully some people will like the songs. It feels good when they’re played on the radio and when friends come to the shows. The band has given us great opportunities to create art, befriend other musicians, and spend more time having fun.
Your latest track is ‘Only You’. Can you share with us the background of its creation and did any unusual things happen during its creation?
That song talks about the early stages of dating someone, catching feelings, and considering monogamy. The dating world is an adventure park full of scary and thrilling rides. We’re just the carnival barkers inviting you to come on in and listen to our pop song about the fear of eventually breaking up.
What is one message you would give to your fans?
Text a compliment a day to a different friend.
How do you spend your time?
We’re a mixed bag of meditation, going to live shows, staying in and reading, making more music, and working on our Grandmaster Hermit certification.
What are you most proud of?
We take emotions and give them a soundtrack, and hopefully some people will like the songs. It feels good when they’re played on the radio and when friends come to the shows. The band has given us great opportunities to create art, befriend other musicians, and spend more time having fun.
If you could go open a show for any artist, who would it be?
A David Blaine magic show, but only if he could make us levitate while we rocked our set.
How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
The internet is either the greatest invention of all time or the fall of humanity, but we love the progress of audio technology because making music is easier and more affordable than ever. We like to experiment and twist knobs in the studio, and new technology has allowed for more freedom with at-home music production. The barriers to entry have dropped, which floods Spotify with nonsense, but for us, it’s worth the price to create and distribute our art to the world.
What are your plans for the future?
We try not to die, so… let’s start there. We want to write and release an album a year until we die, in whatever form or permutation of the band that looks like. The last two years were rough, but we’re grateful for where we are and that we have each other. We make pretty songs about ugly situations, and we aspire to play big, memorable live show experiences with packed dance floors and positive human energy. Ultimately, we’d love to play Lollapalooza, ACL and Coachella in 2023.
